How Writing a Novel Can Surface Repressed Memories

TW: sexual assault and childhood sexual assault

Fiction writing comes from our subconscious, where our imagination is. And guess what else is in there? Trauma!

I teach writing students and coaching clients that a book idea comes to you because of something it wants to heal in your subconscious through the writing process. In this episode, it's my turn to share, very vulnerably, about how I know this to be true.

My novel, Sister Earth, was based on a dream, and a passing reference a friend made to a repressed memory. A year after writing the novel, I discovered in an energy healing session that I, too, have a repressed memory. I didn't know I was writing an allegory to my own childhood trauma.

The good news: When we write, we heal.
